Discussion Question #3

Hello Everyone,
I hope your summer is going well, I know mine is. Make sure you are staying on top of your reading and start writing those thesis statements for each chapter. Your thesis statements should be around two-three sentences, no more, and try to explain what the entire chapter is about. In your own words you are explaining what Diamond is trying to prove each chapter. Any questions about that please email me or post them. In addition, start writing your summary papers for two of the discussion question, which were posted by one of your fellow classmates, in case they are not in the back of your book. Those papers need to be 2-3 pages each. Lastly, I somewhat surprised that some students still have not posted. Therefore, if you do talk to some that have not, through whichever mode of communication, let them know they are coming down to the wire and they do not want this to determine whether they make the final roster of the class.

Discussion #3: What were the advantages enjoyed by the Fertile Crescent that allowed it to be the earliest site of the development for most of the building blocks of civilization? How does Diamond explain the fact that it was nevertheless Europe and not Southwest Asia that ended up spreading its culture to the rest of the world.

The fertile crescent is the domiscated the animals which help farmers domicate plants. Aslo, the invetion of the time which the calendar which the egyptains used to predict the floods of the nile. Aslo the harness the used to help plow the fleids. The fertile crescent aslo had their terrain as an advantage because their crops would be able to use natural seclection on the plants because the adapated to their enviorment. Third, the fertile aslo had writing which other civilization didn't have at the time. For example, sumer's frist king used it two write his law. Egypt aslo had laws that created all these frist civlizations. Fourth, the governments of the fertile crescent were not bands or tribes it was a monarchy based one ruler but, the egyptains had a therarchy but they improved on agriculture and architecture for the entire empire.

Rebecca: You may pick one of the discussion questions used already.
Shai: You are taking that discussion question and expanding on the ideas of your answer. As far as the status of whether anyone is in the class or not, that will finalized by the end of the three week. Three objectives must be meet: The blog discussions, the two papers, and test scores for the first few weeks.

The fertile crescent has eight plants around there that were domesticated by the humans living there. But to me Diamond stated that some of those plants could be found in other places. So if they were in other places why the fertile crescent first? But later on he explains that is about the climate and how the plants could adapt to the climate and pollinate with others that are mutated the same way as them.

Thanks mr.farrelly thank and adolfo there is a chapter in the book that could help.

The Fertile Crescent had a very beneficial geographical location which began in what is now southern Iraq. The Fertile Crescent is an ancient area of fertile soil and where two important rivers stretch in an arc from the Nile River to the Tigris and Euphrates River. It covers Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq. The Fertile Crescent promoted farming to spread east and west from its original location. As the gift of the fertile Crescent spread it helped farmers to grow better crops. People were provided with much more nutritious and abundant amount of domesticated plants and animals. The Fertile Crescent soon experienced the beginning of a clash of civilizations. Animals were used for many useful desires. Animals were hunted and then used for shelter, clothing, and nutrition. People used animals for hair, skin, and warmth. Without, the Fertile Crescent’s domesticated animals and plants, then other neighboring countries wouldn’t have enjoyed the same advantages at the Crescent.
Europeans soon took these crops and animals to the New World. (The Americas) Without the spread of farming from the Fertile Crescent, United States wouldn’t have been as advanced in technology and successful in food production as today. Diamond mentions that the Middle East was gifted with all it’s rich land, nutritious crops, and great big domesticated animals. It all spread to the Europeans which were then brought all the crop and animals to the Americas. Southwest Asia didn’t end up spreading its culture, because of it’s geography. Unlike the Fertile Crescent and Europe, Southwest Asia had different climate, soil, and vegetation. On the other hand, the geography of the Fertile Crescent played a positive role, but in the Southwest Asia region it played a negative role. Southwest Asia weren’t supplied with the same crops and animals like the ones in Europe or the Middle East.

The advanteages the Fertile Cresent enjoyed were good land, wild crops ready that were readily prouduced in big amounts by themselves and grew well. Also they had very fertile land which helped them start to farm. Also tey had great animal diversity for food. Basically they had the crops and animals to sustain them. Some crops turned into clothing and they had a great climate which made things easier for them. The Fertile Cresent had the land, crops and rivers to help them develop into a great civilization. However Europe soon attained their crops and succeded as they grew and conquered many places. Europe and Southeast Asia were the ones who ended up spreading their culture to the rest of the world beauce of their geography. As Diamond explained when he stated why and how some places were still under the hunter-gather lifestyle he mentioned that places are able to grow and expand when they are closer to other places and not completly surronded by land. These two places were part of the biggest mass of land, Eurasia so they were going to grow and culture the rest of the world becuase of their superior conditions.

To beign with the Fertile Crescent both popular and the base of all of history of human kind is a large batch of fertile soil dating to ancient times, and where two important rivers meet from the Nile River to the Tigris and Euphrates River. The fertile cresent supported a large population and the one of the pro-dominate kingdoms. occasionally flooding, predicted by the near by peoples.

Along with domestication of plants, they domesticated animals in which they killed were used for shelter, clothing, weapons, tools and nutrition. Using every part of the animal.

As we all know the Fertile Crescent in is the location of the very origin of the society we live in today which is viewed as technologically advance, organized, and literate. However, such a thing as civilization would not be possible without certain geographical advantages presented to the first inhabitants such as climate as well as the livestock and plants available. Climate is one advantage contributed by the Fertile Crescent because of its "mild wet winters and long, dry, hot summers" which was the perfect environment to raise crops such as yams and cereals. To have the ability to harvest crops in high protein is to develop a physically stable society.
Another advantage of the Fertile Crescent would be the number of livestock available to the people of the Fertile Crescent. Large quantities of livestock means more meat and more animals to domesticate which later lead in other societies to horse and bull driven plows for farming as well as milk furs and body parts that were obtained to make stools and lets not forget sacrifices.
Moreover, let us not forget about the abundant supply of plants, which lead to remedies (medicines) wild berries (food) and etc. Hence this early food production then lead to free time which allowed for societies to develop and allowed the people of the fertile crescent to relaxed and worry about other necessities.

The advantages the Fertile Cresent were the wild crops that tended to grow there in large amounts. The grounds stuck to their name, "fertile" which helped proceed with agriculture. They used these plants to feed domesticated animals that later helped them for cropping activities. Some crops were used for the humans own special needs (for example, clothing). Europe and Southeast Asia spread their culture to the rest of the world because of their geography. These locations made up the greatest mass of land, Eurasia, so they began to grow and continued to spread their culture to the rest of the world due to their superior conditions.

The Fertile Crescent was made easy by the Mediterranean climate (rainy mild winters, hot dry summers) favoring nonwoody annuals, a large number of larger-seeded annuals, hermaphroditic self-pollinators, a high percentage of plants suitable for domestication, a high number of prized large grass seeds, multiple usable domesticable mammals, the early domestication of eight founder crops. The fertile Crescent was perfect to start up a civilization from scratch. The Europeans spread it's culture because it had the right geography and it was much closer to the crescent the Southeast Asia.

Fertile Crescent had many advantages that allowed them to be the earliest site of the development for most of the building blocks of civilization. One of the advantage was the climate in the Fertile Crescent’s environment that helped them farm very well compare to other civilization’s climates and lands. As Diamond stated, “ a climate characterized by mild, wet winters and long, hot, dry summers. That climate selects for plant species able to survive the long dry season and to resume growth rapidly upon the return of the rain….” (page136). I agree with Diamond that these climates sound good for farming in the Fertile Crescents. The Fertile Crescent’s major help was Tigris and Euphrates River. The annual flood of the rivers left good rich soil for the farmers, which help them have a good amount of crops and plants to live on. The farmers also started the domestication of animals, animal was a big help towards the domestication of plants and towards other daily needs of the Fertile Crescents civilizations.

The advantages that the fertile crescent enjoyed were climate that were suitable and perfect for the crops to grow and to carry out farming, and an abundant and productive crops that were already present at the lands of the fertile crescent. It also had high diversity of domesticable animals which also led to necessities like wool, transportation, protein, and etc. Diamond explains that the reason for Europe spreading the the culture to the rest of the world instead of Southeast Asia, is that geographically Europe was much more closer to the Fertile Crescent than Southeast Asia was. Regarding the axes, that either stretches from north to south or east to west, east to west axes were a faster way in order to spread or travel crops(which was Eurasia). As soon as Europe had gotten their hands on the crops and domesticable animals located in Fertile Crescent, they were able to spread the goods much quicker than any other continents in the world.

The fertile crescent is located conveniently. The soil is fertile so as to allow farming to be productive. The river produced a form of sustainability itself. Because the farming was great, there was soon a surplus of food which enabled trade to later create power.
The environment of the fertile crescent provided enough food to sustain a civilization. Once the people were settled they could worry about perfecting their government and other systems.

There were many advantages enjoyed by the fertile cresent, which allowed it to become the earliest site of developments for the building blocks of civilization. First, the land was in very good condition to be farmed on. Due to its geographical location, it was the most suitable spot for farming and growing into a large stong civilization. Another key principal that they farming people had was the domestiocation of animals. With this now in order, the people had two different sources of food. People made use of the animals in many ways such as using it as food, clothing, tools, and shelter. These people were precise in using every single part of the animals. As Diamond states, people from southwest asia couln't have spread its culture to the rest of the world because of its geography. The Europeans and people from Southeast asia were able to spread its culture because these two locations made Eurasia and because they had better conditions to spread due to geography and other key factors.

It was the many advantages of the Fertile Crescent that allowed the civilizations that were founded there to flourish as they did. With a stable Mediterranean climate all throughout the area, plant growth and development benefited from the annual climate change from wet winters to long dry summers. As a result of this kind of cultivation, the plants were able to produce big edible seeds that add up to 6 of the world 12 major crop. But not only did the climate favor their crop growth, but the flora also had good producing and abundant wild ancestors which meant that the farmers themselves had to do little to change their development to meet certain needs and standards. This meant the domestication process went much smoother and gave plenty, but also a wide variety of these crops, meaning they could support large populations of people that did not specifically specialize in a farming role. The Fertile Crescent also held a good amount of domesticated animals that favored the geographical diversity of the area and in addition provided them with a wealthy amount of nutritious meat and animal resources and power. As a result of the high plant production and the large quality of bug mammals, the peoples of the Fertile Crescent were very well equipped with so much farming power and thus prospered in almost all aspects of civilization. Their crops dispersed and were spread through out several other sites of cultivation, but only a few were able to continue their successful production as a result of the suitable places and climates that allowed such agriculture to thrive. As they spread to European societies farmer were able to continue their growth through out the Eurasian continent because of similar climate and geographic features along the eastern and western lands. The latitudes of those areas made it possible to further spread more than the southwestern area.

The Fertile Crescent is basically described as the foundation of food production. This where the majority of the crops were produced and these crops spread to ther areas and started food production in other regions. The Fertile Crescent has very fertile soil which is very useful to cultivate crops. Besies this, they also had a variety of wild animal species for domestication and food. They would also use them for clothes, shelter, weapons, tools Also the climate of the Fertile Crescent was perfect for the crops to grow well.

The Fertile Crescent enjoyed many advantages that allowed it to be the earliest site of the development for most of the building blocks of civilization. For instance, the Fertile Crescent lies in a zone called the Mediterranean climate, which is a climate known for its mild, wet winters and long, hot, dry summers. This climate favors for plant species to survive the dry season then back to the rain during the winter. For example, climate changes at the end of the Pleistocene in the Fertile Crescent made the area full of huge crops which could be harvested in a short time. Also those cereal harvests were starters to the domestication of the earliest crops in the Fertile Crescent. Another advantage of the Fertile Crescent is that the wild ancestors of the crops were already abundant in the area. The Fertile Crescent also possesses a high percentage of hermaphroditic "selfers". This plant species makes their job easier since they pollinate themselves. Diamond explain the fact that’s it was nevertheless Europe and not Southwest Asia that ended up spreading its culture to the rest of the world. This was because the Mediterranean climate zone of the Fertile Crescent extends westward through much of southern Europe. Therefore, Europe was geographically closer to the Fertile Crescent than Southwest Asia.

Before i answer and respond to the post i say i came back on the 26 of August and have been driven crazy with the jet lack ok back to work. It's funny that you keep picking questions that i answered for my rsponse questions but hehe that's great for me since i did it before i read this blog. As for the answer to the question, there were many advantages that that allowed the Fertile Crescent to be the earliest site to develop building blocks for civilization. The main reasons was the Mediterranean climate, a large amount of wild animals and plants, and a variety of latitude. All the elements lead to a increase in food supply which is the main reason the elements such as population, political systems, and writing that make up a civilization is made up. It was Europe who spread the culture because Europe interacted with people such as Native Americans and Mesoamericans more than Southwest asia and had the opportunity to talk to them.

Rinnie4589 said...

responding to Dawon what happes when the soil get used up or their was a disease that killed a large amount of plants will the area still be "Fertile" or will it be left dead because the people around the area needed that large amount of food to survive? Does this mean that without the food the Fertile Crescent would not be a center civilization?

[= Rebecca =] said...

The fertile crescent had many advantages that allowed it to become the earliest civilization of the world. The fertile crescent located in Eurasia had many plant and animal species. They had the most animal and plant species than any other continent in the world. They had fertile soil making it a perfect place for food production. A lot of the technology needed for food production appeared rapidly in the fertile crescent making jobs like harvesting and plowing easier. The climate of the fertile crescent favored the species needs causing harvesting in a short amount of time. Food surpluses come about causing them free time and the ability to advance in other areas for a complex civilization. Europe and Southwest Asia were the ones who end up spreading their culture to the world because of its East to West dominant axis. Along that axis, climates were similar causing rapid speed of crops, animals, technology, and of course disease.

The fertile cresent was a cite of the earliest developement of humans since it was a very large piece of land to grow a large amount of crops on. This increased also population size because everyone was provided with crops since most wild crops didnt need actual manual labor to reproduce. The fertile cresent was also a great place for domestiction of wild animals and plants because of the major river that flowed along side it (the Nile). Diamond explains that Europe (being superior) was able to spread its culture much faster than southwest Asia because it was surrounded by so many different pieces of land that which helped spread ideas more widely. However since south west asia wasnt in contact with as many different cultures like Europe (this because they were surrounded by more water than land)their ideas and cultural differences could not be spread as easily.

TheDailySpeshyl said...

the fertile cresent was one of the first areas that humans became moreadapt to new ways of life such as the production of crops and the domestication of animals. It was easier to domesticate animals because the ferti;le cresent was located near one of most major rivers (the Nile). some pluses that the fertile cresent had to offer was the availability of crops which were growing very fast. This led to a major growth human population.
Diamond explains that Europe ws able to spread their culture and beliefs faster than southwester Aisa. This was because Europe was surrounded by many other civilizations that were willing to take on new ideas, while southwest Asia was surrounded by more water than land. This made it more difficult for those civilizations to branch out.

The Fertile Crescent had many advantages that allowed it to be the earliest site of development. One advantage the fertile crescent had was that it lied on the Mediterranean climate zone. The Mediterranean climate was mild, wet winters and long, hot summers. This climate was what helped the plants survive. The plants were able to survive in the long, hot, dry summers because then the rains would arrive. There were some plants that were very useful to the humans. Since the plants were annual, they died every dry season. The fertile crescent had a great advantage with the climate.
The beginnig of the food prodeuction started in the fertile crescent. Where foods and fruits were domesticated. Another adavatge the fertile crescent had on the plants was that they "pollinated themselves". In other words they were known as "selfers", all by themselves they pollinated. They were very useful to the humas. The Europeans domesticated more fruits, plants than the SW Asians, therefore they spread more. Also the fertile crescent lied closer to the europeams.
